Being part of a food web, the hens need protection from predators. Ultimately though, they do become food. As part of our food web, we have a responsibility to give them a good life, keep them in good health and "dispatch" them respectfully at the appropriate time. A year of being underlings and a year of reigning queenly is just about right. At any one time, you should be able to distinguish two distinct flocks.
Seasonally, ideally in the fall when it's not too hot outside (yellow jackets) or too cold (wet & rainy) is the best time to "process" mature chickens into nourishing meat. These raw ingredients are what we use to make all sorts of delicious homemade meals - a necessary part of taking responsibility for our existence.
